Challenge Details

Water bodies (lakes and basins) are typically fed with rainwater, surface water, river water and treated sewage water. This runoff water comes through nearby catchment areas and carries a substantial quantity of silt along its way and settles at the bottom of the lake (siltation). Siltation repeats year after year causing increased accumulation of fine sediments at the bottom, which ultimately reduces the effective holding capacity of water bodies.

Desilting may be taken up for water bodies at regular intervals. However, it is difficult to reroute the existing volume of water to other locations for desilting operations. Thus, we seek solutions for the effective desilting of water bodies without having to empty the water or requiring any additional storage space. This will improve raw water utilization, reduce the Cess/tax paid to government bodies and may prevent flood-like situations in localities.
