Challenge Details

It is essential to measure temperature of flue gases at regular intervals to regulate the heating in the in coke ovens. Temperature is measured by two operators by opening the Flue cap and using a thermal camera. The temperature measurement is done in a harsh environment which needs to be avoided.

There are 32 heating flues in one heating chamber. and  there are 90 heating chambers in a coke oven battery. The temperature of Coke Oven is 1280-1330 Deg C. The temperature of the Flue gas caps (which are opened to measure temperature) could be in the range of 200 Deg C. The Cap is made of Cast Iron and is of 30mm in thickness & 200mm in diameter.

Operators with essential PPE reaches the location (where temperature needs to be measured), removes the flue gas cap and measures the temperature using a thermal camera. This activity is done once in a shift and requires at least two people. It takes approximately 2 Hrs to complete one set of measurements. During movement on hot surfaces, these operators are exposed to high temperature, toxic gas & dust hazards, whcih is currenrly managed by using appropriate PPE. This manual process needs to be avoided. Solutions are invited to automate the flue gas temperature measurement.
