Short Description:

We are looking for solutions to automate the process of manual readings and bill generation in existing analog energy meters.

Challenge Details

Electric meter or energy meter is a device that measures the amount of electric energy consumed by a residence, a business or an electrically powered device. Utility services companies use electric meters installed at consumer’s premises for billing purposes. They are typically calibrated in billing units, the most common one being the kilowatt hour (kWh). They are usually read once each billing period.

The electric meters in the context that are referred to, are analog meters used to measure the consumption of power. The billing for the household or the unit which consumes power is carried out by reading and recording the reading from the meter manually. The billing is prepared by the person visiting each residence or business and recording the meter reading from the analog meter. The current practice of visiting and recording the meter reading is very time consuming & laborious and can be avoided.

We expect a solution to this problem of manual reading and billing. The new system should eliminate the manual reading. The solution should enable the central station (Utility services company) know the meter readings of all the analog meters in order to prepare the individual bills. The solution should be economical and less than the cost of replacing the current analog meters with new network-connected digital meters. It is also not expected that the resident or the user would record the readings and send it to the central station.
