Opening the taphole is a critical blast furnace operation that requires precise alignment of the taphole drill machine with the existing taphole channel. Currently, operators verify alignment manually by visually assessing the drill tool position, confirming that the drill bit is correctly seated on the taphole centerline, and communicating the required corrections before drilling begins. This activity is performed close to the furnace front, exposing operators to high temperatures, and relies significantly on operator experience and judgement. Incorrect alignment can lead to improper drilling trajectories, accelerated drill-tool wear, longer drilling cycles, and potential operational disturbances.
We are seeking an automated taphole drill alignment verification solution capable of identifying the taphole center, assessing the drill tool's orientation and seating, and providing real-time alignment feedback before drilling is initiated. The solution should enable accurate and consistent positioning without requiring operators to enter the hazardous zone, thereby improving operator safety, drilling consistency, and operational reliability.
